Sanford Hospital Luverne now offers digital mammography. As you know, mammography continues to be the best method for early breast cancer detection.
“The main advantages of digital mammography are that it’s quicker to process the images, involves less exam time for the patient, and the image is more detailed and possibly easier to read,” said Dr. Jeff Willis, diagnostic radiologist at Sanford Hospital Luverne.
A digital mammogram is an electronic image of the breast that is stored directly in a computer system. Digital mammography uses less radiation and allows for improvements in image storage and transmission.
The actual process of having a mammogram won’t change, except that compression times will be decreased.
The addition of digital mammography will help keep Sanford Hospital Luverne on the cutting edge of technology. Patients won’t have to drive very far to receive the benefits of this newer technology.
“New technology usually comes out in the universities, then big cities, and then medium-sized cities,” Willis said. “Getting it in Luverne only two years after it being in Sioux Falls, that’s pretty quick.”
An added benefit of digital images being stored on computer is that the images can be sent to area specialists, if needed.
Sanford Hospital Luverne performs approximately 1,600 mammograms a year. This includes screening, diagnostic, and biopsy procedures, as well as breast ultrasound. All radiologic technologists performing digital mammography at Sanford Hospital Luverne are women who are trained in digital mammography.
