Sanford Medical Center Luverne Earns Patient Safety Excellence Awards

09/20/2010
(Luverne, MN) — Sanford Medical Center Luverne has earned a total of four Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) Patient Safety Excellence Awards for its work to promote patient safety and prevent adverse patient events from occurring.

These awards honor high-performing hospitals in one or more of MHA’s five patient safety campaigns — SAFE SKIN, SAFE from FALLS, SAFE SITE, SAFE COUNT, and SAFE ACCOUNT. The campaigns, which aim to prevent top-reported adverse events, are built around a “roadmap” of best practices. Hospitals that implement at least 90 percent of roadmap steps earn the award.

Patient safety is a top priority for Sanford Medical Center Luverne. That’s why Sanford Medical Center Luverne joined the following initiatives, where Minnesota teams are working collectively on implementing extensive lists of recommended actions to promote patient safety:
  • SAFE from FALLS – preventing patients from falling during hospital stays (awarded in 2010)
  • SAFE SKIN – preventing pressure ulcers (awarded in 2010)
  • SAFE COUNT – preventing sponges or other objects from being retained in a patient after giving birth (awarded in 2008)
  • SAFE SITE – preventing wrong-site surgeries and other surgical events (awarded in 2010)
The MHA Patient Safety Excellence Award is given to facilities that have achieved more than 90 percent of the recommended actions.

“Hospitals that receive these awards are to be commended — the bar is set very high,” said MHA Patient Safety Vice President Tania Daniels. “Hospitals that qualify have achieved measurable and meaningful progress toward implementing best practices to drive down adverse health events.”

“I am proud of the work our staff has done to achieve these accomplishments,” said Tammy Loosbrock, CEO of Sanford Medical Center Luverne. “These patient safety awards show our level of commitment to improving patient safety.”
